Having previously trained some high-class gallopers for Australian Bloodstock, including the now Swettenham Stud-based Master Of Design to victory in the Group One Darley TJ Smith Stakes at Royal Randwick, the successful team is partnering up again with an interesting prospect named Paederos (Fr).

With exceptional form lines, the French-bred son of Darley’s Champion Sire Exceed And Excel has had five starts to date for two second placed efforts behind Sky Hunter (first clip below) and Spiritjim (second clip below).

Sky Hunter went on to win at Listed level before finishing third at Group One level in the Prix Du Jockey Club, while Spiritjim also went on to record victory at Listed level.

At only his fourth career start Paederos was narrowly beaten over 2000m when fifth behind Vancouverite, with that horse then going on to win at Listed level before stepping up and recording a classy win at Group Two level for owner Godolphin.

While the progeny of Exceed And Excel are not necessarily known for their staying prowess, this colt started his career over 1600m and has raced up to 2400m, with his pedigree indicating that staying will be his caper.

Out of the unraced Woodman mare Cas Royaux, herself a three-quarter-sister to the dam of Group Three winner CD Europe, a half-sister to Group Three winner Roi De Rome, as well as to the stakes placed Rose de Thai, herself the dam of stakes winners Truth Or Dare (Group Three), D’Anjou (Listed) and Sandstone (Listed), the pedigree of Paederos indicates that he should appreciated middle distance and staying races in Australia.

Bred on the Danehill – Woodman cross that has produced five Group One winners including the Champion filly and the Golden Slipper winner of a few years back in Miss Finland, Myer Classic winner Hurtle Myrtle as well as the five-time Group One winner Proviso, this colt could also have a career at stud should he step up to stakes level in Australia.

Pictured above and right recently in his box at the stable, the David Payne Racing team would like to wish all the owners the best of luck and we are extremely excited about getting Paederos to the races in the coming months.
