Riddeen by apprentice Serg Lisnyy, One Cool Cat gelding Praecido jumped well from the outside barrier and went straight to the lead in the Vale Desiree Gill Handicap over the 2200m on Wednesday at Warwick Farm.

Showing much maturity, Lisnyy produced an excellent effort on Praecido, with a well-judged ride to score by one-and-a-quarter lengths from the Chris Waller-trained Instrumentalist with a further length back to Perplexity, also from the Waller camp - pictured below right.

While many may knock the fact that it was only his third win from 52 starts, when you take note that he has earned his connections; J J Cordina, Ms S E Ward, D R Cordina, Mrs E M Morley & P P Morley just shy of $700,000 in earnings, as well as a second place in the time-honoured Group One VRC Derby of his three-year-old season behind Lion Tamer, how could you complain?

“He’s doing well,” Payne said after the 2200m race.

“The old boy’s still earning money, so we keep him going. Why not?

“He’s earned close to $700,000, not bad for a cheapie – we only paid $60,000 for him. I’d like to own him.”

Purchased by part-owner John Cordina for $NZ60,000 from the 2009 New Zealand Premier Yearling Sale from the draft of Cambridge Stud, Praecido is out of the Montjeu mare Felictious, herself a daughter of the Group One-winning Bluebird mare Happiness, who has also produced the Listed winner Zankel.

While the progeny of One Cool Cat may not have really lived up to expectations in Australia, the David Payne stable is responsible for providing the stallion with all three of his Australian stakes winners; not only with Praecido, but this season’s Group Three Newcastle Gold Cup winner Winning Glory, and the Listed Starlight Stakes winner Winter King.
