Having always shown ability, three-year-old Dane Shadow mare Devil Miss had previously collected prize money cheques in 16 of her 17 previous runs.

Heading to the Kensington track at Randwick for the twilight meeting on Friday November 29, the David Payne-trained filly broke her maiden in emphatic style.

Contesting the McGrath Wayne Vaughan Maiden over 1550m, jockey Jason Collett jumped the filly away well from barrier two before she sat in a mid-field position on the rail in the field of nine.

Content to keep the filly on the rail until the home turn, Collet pulled her from behind the heels of Water Kiss to make his run down the outside. Surprising her jockey with the ease she sprinted and then gathered the leaders in, Devil Miss pulled away for a length-and-a-quarter victory over Chicago, who had come from behind the winner in the run.

With form behind the likes of stakes winners Paximadia, Romantic Touch, Savvy Nature, Ideal Guide and Gregers during her two-year-old season, the victory of the John Cordina and Sue Ward-owned runner indicates that the penny may have finally dropped.

By Kitchwin Hill’s talented young stallion Dane Shadow, Devil Miss is out of the winning Galileo mare Queen Of Hearts, who was also trained by Payne during the early part of her career for the same connections.
