Bold Circle's stunning plunge blows away bookmakers

BOOKMAKERS were left reeling after the sensationally backed Bold Circle staged a dramatic victory in the Men of League Plate (1000m) at Rosehill yesterday.

The David Payne colt opened up at $8 on TAB Fixed Odds before a flood of money saw him tumble in to $2.90 by post time.

The plunge looked like coming unstuck with Bold Circle bailed up on the fence in the mid-stretch with nowhere to go.

While attempting to switch across the heels of those in front of him, apprentice Serg Lisnyy gave the colt a crack with the whip which caused Bold Circle to veer out suddenly into the middle of the track.

Bold Circle's antics looked as though it would be his undoing but Lisnyy was able to straighten up his mount in time to pull off a miraculous win.

"I think the little bloke just panicked a bit, buy anyway it worked out and that's the main thing," trainer David Payne said.

Payne bought Gold Circle for $100,000 at the Gold Coast earlier in the year and is eligible to contest the $2m Magic Millions 2YO Classic (1200m) on January 11.

"We always thought he was above average," Payne said.

"I think there is quite a bit up the sleeve and he could be something decent later on. We might give one more run and then we might put him out."

Runner-up Sheer Style ($5) turned in an encouraging debut despite having every chance in the run.
