The number 13 may be unlucky to some, but not to D & M Payne Racing (Mgr: D L Payne), W Shelton, S Evans, A Mitchell, G Aldridge, Mrs S Aldridge, S Raleigh, Miss R Shelton, Miss G Shelton & Miss A Shelton, the owners of Artistic Lass, who broke her maiden today at Canterbury in the Australian Turf Club Handicap over 1900m at her 13th career start.

Jumping away as the race favourite after a very good effort the start prior when having finished second at the same track last Friday night, the Myboycharlie filly was away well from the outside barrier before jockey Serg Lisnyy snagged her back to the tail of the field.

One of the first to make her run, Lisnyy urged his filly forward and made her run with the Peter Moody-trained Mutajara around the field. Once that filly was disposed of, Artistic Lass surged clear to break her maiden by an impressive six-and-a-quarter lengths, indicating that this filly is a live Oaks contender come the Autumn. The third placed runner Kayno was another two-and-three-quarter lengths away, highlighting the authority of the victory.

Secured from the draft of Vinery Stud at the 2012 Magic Millions Yearling Sale for $100,000 by Payne Racing Pty Ltd, the filly is the fourth winner for the Peintre Celebre mare Famous Painter, herself a half-sister to the Group Two winner Gallopini and the Listed winner Land Speed Record.

A half-sister to the Group Two Edward Manifold Stakes winner and Group One Robert Sangster runner-up Sistine Angel, Artistic Lass has some previous form around some handy gallopers including Florid Affair, Riocetto, Fuerza, Drago Koroibete and Vitello, who is likely to start a favoured runner in this Saturday’s Group Two Western Australian Guineas.
