2013 Newcastle Cup result - Winning Glory toughs it out

Jockey Nash Rawiller lost his whip but consistent galloper Winning Glory managed to stave off the challengers to claim Thursday's Group III Newcastle Cup (2300m).

Winning Glory carted the field up to the runaway leader Tenby Lady rounding the home turn but Rawiller dropped his whip soon after the David Payne galloper hit the front in the $179,000 contest.

"I got the fumbles at the 300 (metres)and I dropped my whip trying to change it over," Rawiller told Sky Racing World.

Rawiller had to ride for dear life to cover for the loss of his whip but Winning Glory refused to give in, holding off the Chris Waller-trained Lucrepitous to win by a neck.

"Thank God he held on for us. It was kitchen sink stuff," Rawiller said. "He found plenty late. He's held his form up for a long time and was a deserved winner.

"He's a very honest. He's been racing in terrific company and he really brought his A-game here today."

Winning Glory scored his eighth win in 37 starts in the Newcastle Cup but his trainer David Payne said the son of One Cool Cat was likely to head to the spelling paddock after a long campaign.

"If you look at his form, he deserves it. He's been knocking on the door and knocking on the door," Payne said.

"I think he's more of a 2000-metre (horse) but if you look at his form, he's been chasing some really good ones home like Less Is More. I think he deserves a break now.

"He's been up for 11 months, we haven't sent him out. He's happy in the yard."

The Gwenda Markwell-trained Peal Of Bells was third while the $4.40 favourite Danas Best finished 2-1/2 lengths from the winner in seventh spot.
